All-on-4 vs Traditional Implants: Which Is Right for You?

September 26, 2026 7 min readBy Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS·Reviewed by Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS

Four implants for a full arch, or one implant per tooth? Here is how the two approaches compare on cost, timeline, and who each one fits.

Two ways to replace a lot of teeth

If you are missing most or all of your teeth in an upper or lower jaw, you have probably heard two very different recommendations: replace them one by one with traditional implants, or do All-on-4 — four implants that hold a full fixed arch. Both are real implant dentistry. Both work. But they are built for different situations, and the right choice depends on your bone, your budget, and what kind of result you want.

Here is how we explain the difference to patients at our Temecula office.

Traditional implants: one tooth, one root

The traditional approach is straightforward. Each missing tooth gets its own implant post, its own abutment, and its own crown. Lose three teeth, get three implants. It is the closest thing to having your natural teeth back, one by one.

The upside: maximum strength and the most natural feel. Each tooth stands alone, so if one ever has a problem, the others are unaffected. Cleaning is the same as with natural teeth — brush and floss normally.

The downside: cost and time. Six to eight implants in one jaw, placed possibly in stages, with months of healing between steps. And if you have lost significant bone, you may need grafting first. For a full mouth, this is the premium option in every sense — the best result and the biggest investment.

Traditional implants make the most sense when you are missing a few teeth here and there, with healthy teeth (or existing implants) in between. For a whole arch, they are possible but rarely the most practical route.

All-on-4: four anchors, a full set of teeth

All-on-4 was designed for a specific problem: people who have lost most or all teeth in a jaw and often do not have enough bone for six or eight individual implants. Instead of one implant per tooth, we place four implants — the two in back angled to use the dense bone in front of the sinuses or nerves — and attach a full fixed bridge to them.

The upside: fewer implants, often no bone grafting, one surgical appointment, and many patients leave with fixed temporary teeth the same day. The total cost is typically lower than a full set of individual implants. For denture wearers who are tired of adhesive and slipping plates, the change in daily life is enormous.

The downside: it is one connected piece. If an implant fails, the whole arch is affected, not just one tooth. The bridge needs to be removed by us for professional cleaning on a schedule, and you will need to clean carefully underneath it at home with the tools we show you. And the final prosthesis is a bridge, not individual teeth — it looks natural, but it is a different structure.

Who is each one for?

Lean toward traditional implants if: you are missing a few teeth, your remaining teeth are healthy, your bone is good, and you want the closest match to natural teeth with the simplest long-term maintenance.

Lean toward All-on-4 if: you are missing most or all teeth in an arch, you wear (or are facing) dentures, you have lost bone and want to avoid grafting, or you want fixed teeth with fewer surgeries and a lower total cost.

There is also a middle ground we should mention: implant-supported dentures (sometimes called snap-on dentures). Two to four implants hold a removable denture firmly in place. It costs less than All-on-4, eliminates the slipping, and still preserves bone. For some patients, it is the smartest answer.

The honest part nobody tells you

Every office has a favorite. Some offices only do All-on-4 and will recommend it to everyone. Others only place single implants and will steer you away from full-arch work. The honest answer is that your scan decides, not the office's preference.

At Paris Dental, we do both, which means we can actually show you both plans side by side — what each costs, how long each takes, and what maintenance looks like five and ten years out. Then you choose with real information.

If you are weighing these options, start with a consultation and a 3D scan. Call us at (951) 577-8090 — we are at 31285 Temecula Pkwy STE 205, open Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Or message us on Messenger at https://m.me/parisdentaltemecula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between All-on-4 and traditional implants?▾
Traditional implants replace teeth one by one — each implant supports one crown. All-on-4 uses four (sometimes more) implants to support a full fixed arch of teeth. It is designed for people missing most or all teeth in an upper or lower jaw.
Is All-on-4 cheaper than getting many individual implants?▾
Usually, yes. Fewer implants, one surgical plan, and one prosthesis generally cost less than placing six to eight individual implants with separate crowns. The exact difference depends on your case, so ask for both options in writing.
Can All-on-4 be done without bone grafting?▾
Often. The back implants are placed at an angle to take advantage of the bone you already have, which is exactly why the technique was developed. A 3D scan will tell us whether your case qualifies.
Do All-on-4 teeth feel like real teeth?▾
They are fixed in place — they do not come out at night like dentures — so chewing and speaking feel much closer to natural teeth. The prosthesis is a bridge-style piece, though, so cleaning underneath it takes a little practice.
