Same-Day CEREC Crowns: How One-Visit Crowns Actually Work

September 26, 2026 6 min readBy Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS·Reviewed by Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS

No temporary crown, no goopy impressions, no second appointment. Here is how CEREC technology lets us design, mill, and place your crown in a single visit.

The crown appointment everyone dreads (and why it changed)

If you have had a crown the old way, you remember the drill — pun intended. Appointment one: the tooth gets shaped, a goopy impression material sits in your mouth while you try not to gag, and you leave with a temporary crown and a warning not to chew on that side. Then two or three weeks of waiting. Then appointment two: hopefully the lab crown fits, hopefully the temporary did not fall off in the meantime.

Same-day CEREC crowns throw all of that out. One appointment. No temporary. You walk out with your permanent crown.

How it actually works

The process has four steps, and all of them happen while you are in the chair.

1. We prepare the tooth. Same as always — the damaged or decayed part is removed and the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. You are fully numbed, so this is the boring part.

2. We scan, not impress. Instead of impression goo, a small digital camera takes thousands of images of your tooth in seconds. On the screen, you can see your own tooth in 3D. No gagging, no mess, no waiting for material to set.

3. We design your crown. Using the scan, we design the crown on a computer — its shape, its contact with neighboring teeth, and how it meets the tooth you bite against. This is where the technology earns its keep: the fit is calculated to fractions of a millimeter.

4. The mill makes it. Our in-office CEREC Primemill carves your crown out of a solid block of dental ceramic while you wait. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Then we check the color match, polish it, and bond it permanently to your tooth.

Total time: roughly two hours. You came in with a broken tooth. You leave with a finished crown.

What the crown is made of

CEREC crowns are milled from blocks of high-strength ceramic — the same family of materials labs use for premium crowns. The block is one solid piece, which means there is no layered porcelain to chip off. The ceramic is chosen to match the shade of your surrounding teeth, and because the crown is designed from a 3D scan of your actual mouth, the fit is remarkably precise.

Are they as good as lab crowns? In clinical use, yes — they perform comparably in strength and longevity. And the digital impression is often more accurate than the old putty method, which means fewer adjustments and a better bite.

The part patients love most

Ask anyone who has had a temporary crown fall off over a weekend, and they will tell you: the best part of CEREC is not the technology. It is never having a temporary crown at all.

Temporaries are the weak link of traditional crown treatment. They leak, they come loose, they leave the tooth sensitive, and if one fails, you are back in the chair for an emergency fix. With a same-day crown, the permanent restoration goes on immediately. The tooth is sealed, protected, and done.

When same-day is not the answer

Honesty requires the other side. CEREC is ideal for single crowns — the bread and butter of crown work. But some situations still need a lab: complex multi-tooth cases, certain cosmetic front-tooth work where a master ceramist's artistry matters, or cases where the bite needs to be rebuilt across several teeth. If your case is one of those, we will tell you upfront and explain why.

We would rather do a two-visit lab crown that is right than a one-visit crown that is almost right.

Is it more expensive?

This is the surprise: usually not. You are paying for one appointment instead of two, no lab fee, no temporary. Offices price it comparably to traditional crowns. If you need an exact number for your tooth, call us — we will give you a straight quote.

2. Escaneamos, no impresionamos.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day CEREC crown appointment take?▾
Plan on about two hours from start to finish. That includes preparing the tooth, the digital scan, designing and milling the crown, and placing it. Compare that to two separate appointments weeks apart with the old method.
Are CEREC crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?▾
Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-strength ceramic, and they perform comparably to lab-fabricated crowns in clinical use. The digital fit is often more precise than a traditional impression.
Do I still need a temporary crown?▾
No — that is the whole point. Your permanent crown is made and placed the same day, so there is no temporary to fall off and no sensitive weeks in between.
