Dental Anxiety in Temecula? How We Help You Relax

September 26, 2026 8 min readBy Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS·Reviewed by Dr. Noorullah Azim, DDS

If the thought of the dentist makes your stomach drop, you are not alone — and you are exactly who we built our approach around.

You Are Not the Only One

If reading this page made your shoulders tense up a little, welcome — you are in the majority. Dental anxiety is one of the most common fears there is. In our chairs we have met teachers, truck drivers, nurses, Marines. Tough people, capable people, who all say some version of the same thing: "I know this is silly, but I am terrified of the dentist."

It is not silly. Most dental fear comes from somewhere real: a painful experience as a kid, a dentist who did not listen, years of embarrassment about teeth that kept you away until the problem felt too big to face. Whatever your reason, it is valid. And it does not disqualify you from good dental care — it just means you need a dental team that takes it seriously.

That is us. Nervous patients are not a problem for our schedule. They are a big part of why we do things the way we do.

What We Do Differently

We listen first. At your first visit, before anyone picks up an instrument, we ask about your fears. Bad experience in the past? Tell us what happened so we do not repeat it. Afraid of needles? Of the sound of the drill? Of not being numb enough? The more specific you are, the better we can take care of you.

You get a stop signal. Before any treatment begins, we agree on one: raise your hand, and we stop. Immediately. No eye-rolling, no "we're almost done." When you know you can stop everything with one gesture, the panic loses most of its power.

We numb thoroughly — and we check. Numbing is not a race. We give the anesthetic time to work, and we test before we start. If you feel even a twinge, we stop and add more. Our rule is simple: we do not begin until you confirm you feel nothing.

We explain as we go (or stay quiet — your call). Some anxious patients want to know every step before it happens. Others would rather put on headphones and not hear a word. Tell us which one you are, and we will match it.

We go at your pace. Shorter appointments, breaks whenever you need them, treatment spread over several visits instead of one marathon — whatever makes it manageable. There is no prize for getting it all done in one day.

The Embarrassment Problem

Let us address the thing many anxious patients never say out loud: shame. "My teeth are so bad." "I haven't been in ten years." "You're going to think I'm disgusting."

We need you to hear this clearly: we do not think that. We see patients every single week who stayed away for years. What we think is that you showed up, and that took courage. The past is not our business. Getting you healthy from today forward — that is our business.

Small Tricks That Actually Work

Beyond what we do in the chair, a few things genuinely help nervous patients:

  • Book a morning appointment. Less time to sit and worry beforehand.
  • Bring someone. A partner, a friend, your mom — whoever calms you down is welcome in the room.
  • Bring headphones. Your music, your podcast, whatever keeps your mind somewhere pleasant.
  • Eat something light first. Low blood sugar makes anxiety worse, and some treatments go easier on a non-empty stomach.
  • Tell the front desk when you book. Say "I'm a nervous patient." That one sentence changes how we plan your whole visit.

The First Visit Is the Hardest

Almost every anxious patient tells us the same thing afterward: the anticipation was worse than the appointment. That first visit — where nothing hurts, nobody lectures you, and you leave with a plan instead of a crisis — tends to break the cycle. The second visit is easier. By the third, some people actually fall asleep in the chair. We are not kidding; it happens.

You do not have to be brave. You just have to make the call, and we will handle the rest gently.

We are at 31285 Temecula Pkwy STE 205, open Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Our whole team speaks English and Spanish. Call (951) 577-8090 — tell us you are nervous, and we will take it from there. Or message us quietly at https://m.me/parisdentaltemecula if calling feels like too much. That counts as a first step too.

¿A no quedar bien adormecido?

"No he venido en diez años."

  • Traiga a alguien.
  • Coma algo ligero antes.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am embarrassed about how bad my teeth are. Will you judge me?▾
Never. A huge share of our anxious patients stayed away for years, and we see the result every week. Our job starts the day you walk in — not with a lecture about the years before. You will be treated with respect from the first hello.
Can I stop the procedure if I feel panicked?▾
Absolutely. We agree on a simple signal before we start — usually just raising your hand — and we stop the moment you use it. No questions, no sighing, no rushing. You are in control the entire time.
Do cleanings hurt if my gums are sensitive?▾
They should not. We numb the area when gums are tender or inflamed, and we check in with you constantly. If you have had a painful cleaning somewhere else, tell us — we will do it differently.
